Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Reflection
Life has a way of making us question the future.
Sometimes it’s a difficult diagnosis. Sometimes it’s the loss of a relationship, a job, a dream, or someone we love. There are seasons when tomorrow feels uncertain, and hope can seem more like wishful thinking than something we can truly hold on to.
The people who first heard Jeremiah’s words understood that feeling. They weren’t living in comfort or certainty. They were living in exile, far from home, wondering if life would ever be the same again. Yet it was into that uncertainty that God spoke these remarkable words: “I know the plans I have for you…”
God’s promise wasn’t based on their circumstances changing overnight. It was based on God’s unchanging character.
Biblical hope is different from the way we often use the word today. We say, “I hope everything works out.” “I hope tomorrow is better.” But biblical hope is not wishful thinking. It is confident trust in the God who already sees tomorrow while we are still living today.
There will be moments when we cannot understand what God is doing. There may even be seasons when the future feels hidden from our view. Yet our confidence doesn’t rest in what we can see. It rests in the One who already holds what we cannot.
Hope grows stronger when trust grows deeper.
The more we come to know God, the less our confidence depends on our circumstances and the more it rests in God’s faithful heart.
Trust in the God who is holding tomorrow, even when today hurts.
Prayer
Faithful God,
There are days when tomorrow feels uncertain, and if I’m honest, I sometimes find myself trying to carry what was never mine to hold.
Forgive me for the moments when fear quietly replaces trust and I begin believing that everything depends on me. Help me recognize when I’m holding too tightly to things that I can’t control and gently teach me to place them back into Your hands.
When uncertainty leaves me feeling helpless, hopeless, or alone, remind me that my future has never been outside of Your loving care. Strengthen my heart to trust You, even when I cannot see what lies ahead or recognize Your work in the way I expected or imagined.
Teach me to rest in Your promises instead of my predictions and projections. Fill me with a hope that is rooted not in changing circumstances, but in Your unchanging character.
Thank You for going before me, walking beside me, and holding tomorrow while You faithfully hold me today.
